    Hi all, I'm Jack.
I'm thinking about getting a pug.
What exactly do I need to ask when looking to buy one?
I'm guessing I need to have it registered somewhere.
And where do I have to take care of the tax stuff?
I have already have a ferret and I'm afraid is it okay to buy a little dog.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Hi Jack and welcome to PugVillage!

We used to have a ferret and it really enjoyed playing with the dog we had at the time. I think as long as you supervise them and make sure the dog is very gentle , they should be fine. Do not leave them alone together though, for safety.

Yes, the dog will need to be registered. It looks like you are in Santa Clara, California? The dog will need a license and all required vaccinations. I did a quick search and it looks like you would go to: https://www.svaca.com/services/animal-licensing

As for what to look for when buying a pug, you will want to try to make certain that the breeder is reputable and that the puppy and it's parents have been well taken care of. You want to avoid breeders who are just out to make money, such as a "puppy mill," and look for breeders who are seeking to better the breed. Ideally, they should have been tested for certain health issues that affect pugs and you should get to meet the parents of the puppy. The breeder should be able to tell you a little bit about the bloodlines and things such as if the dog is "show quality" or "pet quality." The home page of Pugvillage has several articles about pugs that might be helpful:
    https://www.pugvillage.com/your-first-pug
    https://www.pugvillage.com/your-firs...w-owning-pug-1

You might also want to consider adopting a pug from a rescue organization. In many cases, an adult pug is easier for "beginners" since the puppy-period can be challenging in many ways. Plus, by adopting a pug who is in need of a new home, you are giving that dog a great chance at a happy new life. https://www.pugvillage.com/pug-rescue
There are several pug rescue's in California. You could look then up online to see who is closest to you.

    Jack.

I believe there are a few excellent breeders by you. I suggest you look at https://www.pugdogclubofamerica.com/, their website has changed a bit but I think they still have links to PDCA reputable breeders. We got both of ours from a PDCA breeder through the website in Los Angeles a couple years ago. Good luck with your search.
