I am still steaming, I am going to see if I can get her into another Vet a friend uses and highly recommends tomorrow if she doesn’t seem any better. I feel like so many places are using COVID as an excuse for lack of individualized care anymore but yet they are still charging the same amounts or higher with surcharges. I wanted continuity of care with my pugs but I’m starting to think I would be better off taking them to the Vet school or even Banfield.

I do agree that covid has changed vet care. I think they got used to minimum care and no hustle anymore, one patient every 30 minutes. They continue to charge a lot so they stay afloat.

So sorry to read this Nancy. What a terrible way to treat both you and Lolli!

Things are still not good with vets here either. My local vets recently put a notice on their Facebook page asking clients to “be kind” to their staff as it’s not their fault that so many vets have left and they can’t offer instant appointments anymore. Just to put that into perspective they are one of the most expensive veterinary organisations to go to in the area with multiple branches, but presumably their pay and working conditions are not conducive to staff staying long term - most of which are not long qualified vets that came from Europe. They’ve also changed their rules again, no longer allowing clients inside. So it’s back to handing your dog over in the car park again.

I was just going to add that I’ve only ever seen blood spraying from one of my dog’s noses and that was Darwin - but I also saw exactly how it happened. He was still a puppy and before I could stop it happening he grabbed Bree’s tail and yanked it. Not surprisingly she turned around and snapped at him bopping him really hard on his nose! There was no graze/cut on his nose at all as she hadn’t bitten him, but the impact sure made it bleed! At least he left her alone after that, but it made me feel quite sick and I expect his nose was pretty sore for a few days

    Default For Lolli

I hope Lolli is getting better soon. I would be just as concerned not having a concrete answer. So why give her meds if you do not know what is going on? I think you are smart to see another vet.

I have such a hard time with Blue Pearl. The wait is hours in the car until they get you for an emergency. No bathroom they just say go down the road to the gas station. Then they did a 1/2 ass job. I still have not gotten the blood test results. I had my vet look at the x-ray and he was telling me it was not very good. I am happy I found my new vet . I run out my Banfield plans and I will miss the convenience to get in same day and have weekend appointments.

So sad that this is a problem everywhere, they have the same be kind to our staff poster in this office as well but I feel like it should work in reverse just as well for the paying clients who are just trying to get their babies seen by a competent individual who is supposed to be just as caring with their patients.

I wish I could chalk this up to trauma but she had been sound asleep in their crate and as soon as she got up she started sneezing and blood was spraying, it was all over the floor, walls and filled a tissue when I went to wipe it off her face. Without trauma of some kind I just don’t see how this is just an irritation especially with as congested that she has been since last Friday.

Poor you and Darwin, after seeing blood coming out of her nose I know how traumatizing that experience truly is.

That's ridiculous. I'm so annoyed for you!! Poor Lolli.
The antibiotics may be empirical to cover for aspiration just incase. That's common even if there's no suspicion whatsoever.
I really hope Lolli is feeling better soon and you get answers.
I'd also be fuming about them not telling you about giving the first dose. The emergency vet once prescribed Charlie double the dose of antibiotics that he should have had. Was only because its a common drug that I realised and rang them to rant. I got £50 out of them but no apology.

    Sending hugs to Lolli!

OMG, poor Lolli! I read the first post and was so worried about her, wondering what might have caused this... and then I read about your vet and was furious!!! I started to write my own long rant about our vet, but rather than take your thread way off track with my complaints, I will start a different thread for that. I do think you need to find a different vet if you can and get another opinion. That is unacceptable that they started Lolli on meds without explaining why she needs them and then failed to tell you that she was given the first dose. What if it was something that could have seriously harmed her by giving her a second so soon?! What if it had been a pain med and you accidentally overdosed her because they didn't tell you!! Scary!!!

Has it been especially dry there recently? Sometimes I get a bloody nose when it's very dry air. Or could Lolli have accidentally inhaled a piece of grass or something into her nostril? I know a few days you were thinking she might have influenza... is it possible that she's been sneezing so often that it led to a nose bleed?

Sending loads and loads of positive vibes for sweet Lolli and hoping she feels much better soon.

The vet just called and started off by asking how much blood there was, was it a minor spray or more? I lost it in what my kids refer to as my serious quiet very well enunciated scary voice, and said shouldn’t you have asked me this during the 7.5 hours she was sitting in your office and before you prescribed meds? He said with her having had the congestion for 4 days he thought the best course of action was to prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic to treat any type of infection that could be causing this and a steroid with an antihistamine in it to help with the congestion he could hear. He then proceeded to tell me how his staff had overbooked him for the day so that’s why he couldn’t be there when I picked her up He then said that if she isn’t better in 2-3 days I need to get her seen by a specialist that could scope her sinus cavity and throat to determine if there could potentially be something she inhaled that got lodged in there or a growth of some sort. I again reminded him about the grass from the day before all this started and he said he didn’t think that would be the issue, he said when there is something that was inhaled it’s generally a small seed or a mold spore. I told him his receptionist had said two to three weeks for a re-check and about the medication communication error and he just replied well she needed two doses today anyway so it shouldn’t adversely affect her. I was so upset with his blasé attitude I just told him that I felt that she didn’t get the standard of care that I felt she deserved after being there for 7.5 hours and that I will be reassessing where she gets her Vet care. He went on about COVID and how it’s affected his practice etc, and I just hung up. My pugs deserve better care than this. Thankfully Lolli seems to be resting comfortably right now, I went ahead and made an appt tomorrow for the recommended vet just for my peace of mind though.

I'm glad your vet called you back to (FINALLY) ask the proper questions, but I'm even more glad that you said what you said and held your ground. Good for you!! Lolli depends on you to be her voice and your "serious quiet very well enunciated scary voice" was exactly what was needed. I hope your vet got the picture loud and clear.

Please let us know what the other vet says. I hope Lolli sleeps well tonight and doesn't have any more blood from the noise. Sending positive thoughts and get well wishes for lil' Lolli.
