What other dog breeds are compatible with Pugs?

hi PV, its been a while since ive been here...but looks like everything and everyone is doing well.

well on to my question...

in a couple months from now, i'll be moving in with some of my friends and one of them expressed interest in getting another dog. knowing that ill already be bringing Biggie with me, he wanted to see if this was ok with me- it definitely is, Biggie always loves company.

my friend asked me what kind of breed would get along great with a pug...pretty much meaning, what kind of dog wouldnt be too aggressive to the point where Biggie could get hurt.

the obvious answer is another pug :laugh:

but my friend wants a bigger dog

i suggested maybe a golden retriever or some variety of Lab...because ive heard they have good temperaments.

i wanted to ask PVillagers what other kinds of dogs they may suggest and why....whether it be from personal experience or from word of mouth.

Goldens are gentle, and labs are nice---but both need to be supervised in the get acquainted stages, and seperated always when you are at work. Puppy obedience and Biggie obedience classes would help sort things out on the right foot.

I have a Golden and she is very good with my pug. They are both seniors, so that might make a difference.

My brother has a 1 year old chocolate lab and we can't let her and Izzy play together. They love each other but the lab just plays to rough. I'm sure once they both get a little older and settle down they'll be just fine.

I love goldens and labs both great dogs! I only have 3 days experience but our boxer is in LOVE with her baby pug brother. Boxers have a lot of energy but ours is also very sweet and obedient!

are there any other breeds of dogs (other than goldens and labs) that might be compatible/friendly with a pug?

funny you should mention that izzy, my friend just told me hes thinking of getting a chocolate lab...hmmm, maybe i should tell him its not a good idea

I tend to think that it's more of the individual personality. Sure, breeds have traits and all that, but each dog is different. Just never ever leave them alone together. Years ago my roommate and I made that mistake, and I lost a pug because of it, to her boxers.

What about a greyhound or whippet? I hear they are very placid and like snoozing a lot. Might be a good cuddle companion for a pug.

My trainer has just got a tibetan terrier pup who Snifter likes very well.

I would say the best bet is to adopt an older dog. More laid back, past that gangly puppy stage and easier to tell final temperment than with a puppy.
