Eating TOO Fast

It it's kibble you can float it in warm water. That has the added benefit of making sure they drink enough, which is necessary with kibble. I do that and I also put some into a kong for Toddy, which goes in the food bowl. This slows him down because he a) has to work around the kong and then b) has to get food out of the kong.

Raise the bowl and also, put a tennis ball or something similar in with the food. It makes them slow down because they have to work to get at the food.

Phoebe used to be the same way when I fed her kibble but I got her a portion pacer ball at Petsmart. She slowed down a lot after that. I don't use it anymore though because I feed her raw and flood it with water so she takes her time eating that without the ball. I have it sitting on a shelf in my kitchen not being used. If you want it it's all yours. PM me your info and I can send it to you. I would rather have it go to use instead of collecting dust. Btw, I used to live in Florida too. I was on the Gulf side in the Bradenton/Sarasota area. Seeing your picture makes me miss it alot right now!

shylah eats fast too. and if she gets too excited she makes the same noise.

Tilly has choked three times and had to be brought back. It's the scariest thing to see your pug flat on the floor and not breathing. We've been feeding her on a towel folded in half and spread the kibble as much as we can.

edward does this also...im quite concerned about it because a couple times he just throws it right up and it is still whole pieces so i know hes not even chewing his food, just inhaling it. I will give the tennis ball a try...thank you

You could try a metal muffin baking pan? They are better than plastic bowls you buy at the pet store because the plastic can breed bacteria that cause pimples on the doggies muzzle.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I've raised Cabbage's food bowl and it really seems to have helped. Consuming meals takes about twice as long and I'm not hearing all those choking and wheezing sounds. Though I must say I do not think she's estatic about the extra work she has to do to eat lol.

the tennis ball in the food really helps
an excersise ball that you put the food in
is great too
they have to chase the ball to get the food out
they catch onto the ball fast and it only come out with a few each times it rolls..you could try that too

Rather than a tennis ball, we got a steel ball to put in Leto's dish - it has the advantage that it's washable (we feed a mix of wet and dry.) It really helped and now he's learned not to inhale his food, he doesn't need it anymore. The honking sound is likely reverse sneezing - Leto has done it when he's eaten or drunk too fast.
