You will also have less marking in the house and he will be more focused on YOU -- making him a better pet. Our guys are both neutered and they're real pistols, and really fit and trim.
Talk to your vet and ask about his comfort level anaesthetizing pugs. Make sure the vet does bloodwork and checks his airways to make sure he doesn't have respiratory problems. You might be able to find someone with a special interest in brachy (short nosed) breeds. There are threads here about anaesthetic you can search for. Complications are pretty rare, and the benefits outweigh the risks!!!

Stalin can get like that with certain dogs at the dog park (he IS neutered). He tends to hump when he wants to play and the dog is ignoring him, and sometimes he gets too intense with his sniffing/licking. Not all the time, and not all dogs. I haven't figured it out yet.
Intact dogs aren't allowed at the dog parks here.
As far as neutering goes, Stalin is a fit and trim (and muscular) boy, and he certainly didn't become lazy! Make sure you have a vet who's knowledgeable about snoutless dogs and that you trust his level of expertise. I love our vet and even though I was beside myself with worry, he came through fine. In fact, instead of being tired the next day he was bouncing off the walls! So much for taking it easy!

A neutered male really does make for a better pet. No reason to not neuter him unless you are going to show. I would be afraid that if he tries to hump the wrong dog at the park, he may get attacked. Also I'm sure the other dogs owners don't appreciate it.

The Dapple Duo & Minions are all neutered ... papers were available for KC (and he was intact) and I told the holders to shred them & snipped him pronto. He is a lovely example of a Dapple Dachshund ... but not worthy of breeding for any reason.
They are so active they wear me out. Keeping weight on Nemo and DiNo is a challenge. They border on thin. Pegeen was spayed last month ... the next day she was chasing the golf cart and 'herding' the horses. Has not slowed down a minute since.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should just relax and get used to the idea.

Your little man is very cute, but honestly, looking at the video, he is not breeding quality....not even close. Neuter him, give him obedience training and he will become a loving and wonderful pet for the rest of his life.
The world doesn't need more casually bred pugs.
One of mine is a mad humper too, so I feel your pain. Verbal correction and distraction is the best way to dissuade the behavior. You should keep him on leash until he will reliably stop and come to you when you tell him. Often humping is a behavior engaged in by dogs who are a bit anxious...or overwhelmed in a large group of strangers. Obedience class will build his confidence.
Good luck!
Take care,

I have 2 intact boys (I show them a bit) and yes, they hump. Within our local group of pug friends, they all hump each other from time to time, irrespective of gender and whether or not they are altered. You can quickly see if it is getting out of hand, and usually it does not. I am not actually bothered about them humping each other unless it becomes excessive or one is getting annoyed by it, which does occasionally happen. I figure I would rather they hump each other than human legs, although the show can get a bit embarrassing if the MIL is visiting. However both of mine are kept on leash in the public parks. They only get to run free with dogs they know and are a similar size to them.
That said, I really think you should neuter your boy if you are not planning to show him. Without being rude, I agree with Lisa that from the video he does not look to be show quality, though clearly very cute, and certainly using him at stud will do nothing to improve his behaviour.
Obedience classes should help, and I really think you should keep him on leash in the dog park especially if there are big dogs there. That Ridgeback was being very patient with him but his "puppy licence" will be fast running out, and will already have done so for some dogs. He could get seriously hurt if he does that to the wrong dog. Socialisation in the context of a class is a far better way to go right now.

"sexual predator" tee? really?
i almost wasn't going to respond to this post.
he is acting like that because he's NOT NEUTERED!!! i agree - talk to a vet - talk to a couple - about their experience with pugs and anesthesia. he and you will be better off if you neuter him. he will calm down, be more focused on you and be generally a happier boy. he is going to get himself AND you into heaps of trouble acting like that at a dog park - or anywhere for that matter. all he needs to do is to approach the wrong dog and he could easily be killed. listen to your BF. i know some on the list have intact boys, but as they've said - they take many steps to make sure they are responsible with their dogs. taking him to an off-leash dog park isn't one of those things!
get him neutered, then sign him up for a local obedience training class (we are bringing our rescues to training classes at Petsmart starting this week). you'll be so glad you did.
our boy is THE sweetest, funniest and playful boy. and he's neutered.
If you're worried about the anesthesia part, then you need to find a vet that you trust. We do many procedures at work on brach. breeds constantly without problem. We have a technician that is there to monitor during surgery and a special tech dedicating to recovery. Everything is monitored and recorded at all times. Yes, their metabolism changes a little bit...oh well, feed a little less and you will save some $$ on food. People don't get that...we see soooo many overweight dogs...Your dog doesn't need to eat constantly all day, or be free fed or get 2 cups a day...I feed a little over 1/2 cup PER DAY! They don't get lazy over night, they dont get fat over night. Pugs start slowing down with age, yes, like every other creature in this world! He won't get fat unless you let him get fat. Keep up his play time, exercise and walks, and adjust his food intake as needed. There is no reason why you shouldn't neuter him and will only help him in the long run in preventing tumors, enlarged prostate, aggression, possession, and potentially humping and marking. Intact dogs have a tendency to want to roam more, to find that quick...well, you know. They don't feel love, or passion. They do what nature tells them and they don't care how the other dog looks, or how big or whatever it is we look for in people. Mating him wont make him feel better or manlier and can actually make them more aggressive sometimes. A lot of people, and my own experience with neutering, is the dog becomes more of a people/owner dog. When I first took Frank in, he wanted to get out all the time and since I neutered him he has become much more obedient, doesn't care about trying to get out and him and I have a stronger connection. Of course I could have had him neutered him when he was a puppy, but he didn't come into my life until he was about 6, so there is no changing that.
Thank-you everyone for you thoughtful replies. After further consideration I've decided to get him fixed as it seems it is too much of an uphill battle to not. The straw that broke the camels back was he is starting to mark in my boyfriends apartment if we leave him there for a few hours to go out. It's hard to take him out for a quick pee as he marks about 20 times when going out so only pees very little at one time. A 15 minute walk hardly drains him at all. Will fixing him also help this behaviour? My boyfriend was so happy when I told him I was getting winston fixed, I think he was close to banning him from his apartment lol.
It may help, it may not. regardless, a belly band is a lifesaver for markers when they go to a new place. Buy some belly bands and some feminine pads to line them with and you will be well on your way to teaching him potty manners.
Take care,
Lisa
