    Default MuShu's Expensive Eyes!

Sheesh. Sunday (of course, always on a weekend - grrr), after we got home from church, MuShu's right eye was practically swollen shut! We had been to a pug meetup at the dog park the day before and it was terribly windy. Upon arriving at the park, the wind blew tons of dust from the large dog side of the park. I nearly just turned around to get MuShu back into the van but the organizer needed help unloading her table, etc. from her truck. I commented on the wind and dust and we just set up on the far side of the park. I did notice that MuShu had extra goop in her eyes that night so I put some GenTeal Severe eye lubricant in. Anyway, Sunday we rushed her to the ER vet who were absolutely useless! And they actually tried to take MuShu away to a back room without telling me what they were going to do to her! When I asked, the vet seemed surprized but told me all of these tests they were going to perform. I asked if that would have ANYTHING to do with looking for a foreign object in her eye and she said No. I also said they would charge me extra for those tests, she says, Yes. Isn't it illegal to do work on a car without consent? And yet they were just going to do this stuff. She hardly looked at MuShu's eyes in the initial exam and asked about her food, etc. When I told her she was on the BARF diet, omg. I put my had up to her and told her not to even start with me about her food and I was only here to get her eye checked so that there wouldn't be more damage done to the eye. Well, it was crap like that. Grrrr. I told the vet I would take her to a specialist for the other tests. I did allow her to do a stain to check for scratches or ulcers. $174 later, we walk out. Luckily, the animal opthamologist got MuShu in by 8 AM Monday morn. He was WONDERFUL! Did all sorts of tests, got the steroid antibiotic cream and a lubricant and all that only cost $225! Expensive weekend. BUT! He told me that MuShu does not exhibit dry eye, does not have any eye lashes turned inward, no glaucoma, back of the eye looks good, and no PK! I was so worried about PK but he said the pigmintation in the whites of her eyes is not PK and nothing to worry about. The cornea in the right eye showed some irritation but no scratch. And although her tear production is OK, the composition of the tears is not. It breaks up and is "crumbly" as near as he can describe it. So it doesn't have a constant viscosity to it to stay smooth over the eye. Says they don't know what causes it. I asked if it was genetic or diet or supplement related and he said they just don't know. (Hmmm, wonder if any of our very wise and informed PV'rs have ideas about that.) Anyway, I am so relieved it was not serious but really bummed at the extra expense at the horrible ER.

    Sorry this was so long.

I'm so glad that MuShu is OK. That's the important thing....

The ER sucks as a rule I have decided. I'm lucky that our vet clinic has hours every day, plus early and late walk-in, so you only need the vet if something happens really late or overnight.

The one time we took Wally to the ER he had eaten a piece of a peace lily leaf when he was a puppy. I had determined on the ASPCA poison control website the plant was poisonous, and they insisted that it was not and gave me a printout about easter lilies and cats and there was nothing to do because Wally was not in any danger. Hmmm.. wrong species of plant AND animal. Wally could have died before his own vet opened the next day. I think the visit was 300$. Then they sent us a flyer asking for more funds to support all the excellent work they do...... guess where that ended up?

I'm so glad MuShu is okay! What an experience! We live in such a small area we have no ER vet, our vet takes call and meets you at the office. Our practice is a husband and wife and one other vet (she worked a pug rescue in Florida before moving here). Not only do we have to be an advocate for ourselves and families but our pets as well.

Bella has expensive eyes too, aren't we blessed:) Glad it's nothing serious and you were able to get her into the opthamologist, they are so much better at diagnosing things than regular vets.

Some of the problems pugs have is because of the way their eyes are put together and I don't know of anything, besides drops and surgery(if needed) that will help. Here is a link to the opthamologist I go to, click on the link (eye diseases) there is lots of info on some of the common eye problems. Eye Diseases - Central Coast Eye Vet
