I'm new to this forum. I have an old girl, Lucy, who has been coughing and hacking for about 8 months. The vet has tested her for infections and parasites. She's been treated with antibiotics twice. X-rays show her heart is normal size and her trachea is clear. We ran the blood test for congestive heart failure, just to be sure, and her numbers are low, well within the healthy range. Right now, she is on Apoquel, thinking that her coughing may be allergy-related. It's been about a week on the medication and she is still coughing just as much. It is a moist cough. When she tries to hack something up, nothing comes out. The cough seems to happen after eating (but not always) and after laying down (but not always). It seems to be worse starting in the late afternoon and early evening. Anyone have an idea about what this could be? It really just sounds like the cough of an old man.
Hi & I'm glad you found us, although I'm sorry it's under these circumstances....I don't have any experience with this, but I'm sure others will be along soon to help you out. There are lots of nice, knowledgeable people on this site who are always ready & willing to help with any problems you might have. It's a very supportive place, also--we all really need that sometimes!
I have a Pug who is almost 12, & a black Lab who is almost 10. It is so hard when they get older! Good luck with your sweet Lucy--we'd love to see pictures of her if you have time!

hi, we have a pug named penny :) she is about 10 years old and does have a problem with coughing-- she seems like she is going to hack up something and then, nothing comes up and she's done! it generally happens after eating, if we go out and it's cold, something irritates her, or she is over exerted. she does have a collapsing trachea issue. if she stays continuously irritated or overexcited, the coughing/ hacking is harder to control. but we monitor her and do our best to make sure it doesn't get to that point. we take her to her vet when it's excessive and/or disrupts her sleep.
hope you find answers for your sweet pug! ~susan
