    Default Pet insurance - USA

    Hello everyone!

Tomorrow is the day! I pick up our 8-wk old boy puppy, Sky, from the breeder! He comes with one month of Trupanion pet insurance, but I want to continue insurance beyond that. For those of you in the US, which insurance do you have and why? There are so many options these days! Thanks in advance!

I have Nationwide (formerly VPI) major medical plan and I think it's great. $100 deductible per year and what is covered is at 100%
Good for you for realizing the importance of this, and for doing it now. Please do it immediately, some do it even before the pup is brought home! This way you are avoiding the possibility of them excluding a pre-existing condition

Thank you. You are the second person to recommend Nationwide. Like I said, he comes with Trupanion for one month, but I am comparing options for continual coverage. :)

I got a friend who uses Nationwide as well and is happy with it.
I have PetsBest , they were just bought by Care Credit , but was started by Veterinarians.
I use the $100 a year deductible , no limits , 90% coverage. Besides pre existing conditions I got everything covered I claimed so far .
It is very easy to file a claim with the App just take a picture of the bill. It takes usually 1 week to get reimbursed right to your account.
This was less cost than most others when I was looking .
There is a 24 hour hotline for questions.

I have Trupanion for both of mine. I started it the day of their first vet appt. I have only had to use it for Lolli with all of her urinary issues. They have been super easy to work with, you can choose your deductible and payment amount. We have a $200 deductible per incident and they pay claims at 85%. These are the first pets I’ve had with pet insurance and I am happy with the decision to get it. I did the math since we didn’t have it before and with Tucker his non routine vet bills were $21,000 over his 12 years, $10K was his last 2 weeks of life. With pet insurance if the pugs live to 15 years it would be $12,100 a year each. Granted you hope you don’t have major medical problems with your fur kids but after our experience with Tucker we thought it was worth it, especially since we are getting close to retirement.

I decided to get it after my Dachshund got cancer and Gordon had crystals . So when Bruno came along I started the search. It saved me so much $ already with Gordon . When he had the oral surgery and biopsy and all his eye specialist visits including lifetime drops are covered. I see a specialist for every other than routine visits. Bruno has no preexisting conditions so he is covered all the way .
I also have a Banfield plan for mine. I miss my clinic and Dr in MD . I visited one clinic here and so far I like the new Vet . It was a better deal to get the plan for neuter and dentals . Unlimited visits ( even so my other insurance pays for that too) is really nice to have if you just have questions about food or behavior. I know many do not like Banfield but I got only good things to say .

Interesting breakdown of costs, thank you! Isn’t Trupanion the only one (or one of the only ones) that pays the vet directly rather than reimbursement??

You can pick either option but it depends on your vet if they accept it. We just have it get deposited into our acct and it’s normally less than a week turn around.
