So I just got my new puppy pug. She will be 12 weeks on the 27. She has been gagging/coughing mostly at night when sleeping. The breeder said that a few of the dogs had a small cough but it went away. I was concerned about kennel cough but my vet said it would be more consistent and be a bother all day too. What would be causing her to gag at night ? Yesterday she had her kennel cough vaccine up the nose. That same evening she was gagging through the entire night. Not sure if this could be a side effect.
I don't give the kennel cough up the nose. I had a pug get sick from that. A puppy...or adult...should not be gagging! I'd head right back to the vet.....young puppies can go down hill faster than an adult.
The vet never gave me another option when it came to kennel cough. What do you mean by your pug got sick? I got her on Friday night she was gagging a bit when I got her as well. I find that it’s happening more at night when she’s sleeping that it does during the day when she’s hyper running around. Last night she was gagging all through the night as well. She did sleep but she gags through the night it’s almost like a gag and then a cough. I asked my dad about it and they’re not really jumping to anything they just said if it’s a virus it’ll go away on its own or it might just be a pug thing. I don’t know if I agree with a pug thing because I’ve had problems before and I’ve never had this. Do you know what this could be causing the gagging at night I need some advice because I’m not sleeping as I’m putting the crate beside my bed
So I am not exactly sure ... How long have you had your pup ? Why would the vet give kennel cough if the pup is already show signs . The Breeder let a puppy with possible cough leave to a new home ?

Take a video of what is happening. Start a journal ( times and activities ) .
Find a veterinarian who is familiar with the breed or that type . The way I did it ? I looked for my new veterinarian after I moved . It was a bid lengthy but worth while .
I got a list of all vets in my area .
Looked at the websites at the pages where they introduce themselves and talk about their pets.
For example I skipped all veterinarian who own working dogs and are runners . I choose a Pug because while they do need exercise they are no marathon runners and neither am I .
I looked at vets who own either pugs or a similar breed.
You can look at MeetUp see if there are Pug MeetUps around . This would also be a good place to do research . Don‘t take your Pug until it got all vaccinations.

Video the gagging to show the footage to the vet (and maybe post on here).

Has she actually been seen by your own vet for a full health check? Some dogs do display mild kennel cough symptoms after the vaccine, but I'd definitely want her chest and heart listened to by a vet to double check that all is ok. I don't think you can be over cautious with a young puppy myself.
Hope she's soon well!

When I sell a puppy, there is a clause in the contract that the pup must be seen by the people's own vet within 3-7 days.
I would never place a puppy that is gagging or coughing until he/she had been seen by the vet and I would keep the pup til it was well if there was a problem!!
Please take your puppy to the vet ASAP! If that pup is sick, the breeder should help with the vet bill as she was sick when you gother.
I agree with trying to get a video of the gagging and also with having your vet do a thorough check. It could be a lot of different things (from kennel cough, to heartburn, to soft palate issues, etc.), but with a puppy that young, she needs to have a vet take a look and figure out what is happening and treat it.
I hope you are able to get some answers and she is feeling much better soon, with no more nighttime coughing/gagging.

Hello the gagging maybe what is know as reverse sneezing. If you find out that is what your Pug is doing - when it is happening blow puffs of air into their nose. If that doesn’t work hold the nostrils shut for a few seconds. Each time make sure the mouth is closed. Your Pug actually needs to swallow or go thru the act of swallowing. Then the reverse sneezing will stop both of my Pugs do this and it can be misconstrued as gagging I hope this helps you and your Pug our tack care and best of luck.
She has seen my vet. She went to see her two days after I got her and everything sounded fine. She has lots of energy and is eating well. Just for some reason she gags when sleeping at night. When she is hyper and having fun running around she doesn’t gag. It doesn’t make sense to me as she only gags when relaxed and sleeping. I spoke to the breeder and she is going to meet me at her vet on Friday to have her vet take a look. I have videos to show them as well. Anyone experienced this? I am always worried when this happens and I’m not sleeping myself since I am worried.
