    DefaultBen is sneezing uncontrollably

    Hi everyone,

Tuesday morning Ben and I went for our usual morning walk. It was unseasonably warm in Virginia that morning. We usually walk about 15 minutes in the morning. About a minute or so into the walk Ben started sneezing. His sneezes are usually very forceful and continue for a while; shaking his entire body vigorously in the process. This was no different. Unlike other times however, the sneezing this time has still not abated. He calms down when I hold him close or cover him in a blanket. He even napped that afternoon. However, after getting up he was off sneezing again. Later that night, I took him to the vet. Vet treated him for upper respiratory issues with some Doxy and Cough Tabs. We have been on that medication (now Thursday night). Vet thinks if there is something lodged in his nasal passage, it will come out in due time.

My feeling is the Doxy+Cough Tab is not the answer. He seems to be breathing well. In fact, last night he slept like a baby. His nasal passage was clean as whistle(due to the meds I reckon). I did not hear him snore loudly as he usually does. The sneezing however has still not abated. When he is calm, settled or asleep he is fine. But even the slightest movement makes him sneeze uncontrollably. It has now been three days!

I really hope there is not a small blade of grass or seed lodged in his nasal passage. Outside of that, anything else you think might be the problem? His nose is watery when he sneezes. His nose is not bleeding. He has been hypoallergenic food for the past 1 1/2 years. He is 12 1/2 years old. He is pretty miserable right now.

    Any ideas/suggestions will be helpful.

I feel badly for your Ben...and for you!

I would take him for a second opinion.....even to a specialist if there is one near you!

Pls update us when you can!

This sounds awful - sneezing for three days!! The vet may be right about something being lodged up in the nasal passage, but if it hasn't come out naturally yet then it may be time for the vet to take a deeper look. I would take him back to the vet or seek a second opinion from a specialist.

I'm glad Ben doesn't have a bloody nose and seems fine other than the sneezing. I hope he gets some relief soon from the sneezing!

Well, the sneezing stopped after I gave him Benadryl (12.5 mg twice a day for three days). That dried him up. Benadryl had never worked on him before. That is why I preferred Apoquel. Anyway, drying up the nasal passage resulted in coughing. He is on cough tabs now. He possibly caught a bad cold. His favorite spot to poop is 15 minutes away. He will go only there! And he refuses to wear a sweater. So I am now driving him to his spot. Hopefully he is not exposed to cold for as long as before.

Thanks for the update. That's great that the Benadryl helped. I'm glad the sneezing stopped! But sorry to read that he now has a cough. I hope he is fully recovered soon.
