    DefaultAn injury :(

Charlie's broken his dew claw. He was playing with a puzzle toy and suddenly held his paw at a really odd angle. I was horrified because it literally looked like he'd broken his paw / leg!!
His nail was at a right angle :( He let me look at it but not touch it. He can walk fine but you can tell he's hurting because if he catches it, he jumps a mile :(

To cut a long story short, I'm googling and trying to find Leucillin etc etc.......look back at him and the nail has fully snapped off (apparently a "better" scenario than having it still attached). But there's a red bit (hardly any actual bleeding) and he just won't stop licking it. The Leucillin I had is out of date so I can't use it. I doubt very much that he will behave with a bandage on it.
So, I'm thinking if I go and get some Leucillin in the morning and spray it on there (hopefully safe without a bandage).....now the nail is off there's no immediate need for a vet trip ?? I'd rather him be on antibiotics if he needs them of course but he can be quite a skittish kiddo so I'd rather avoid a lockdown visit if I can. I was so proud when he let me look :)

Oh dear, how painful. I would say, though, that it's better that it has broken off so it won't keep catching on things and causing additional pain. It's good, too, that there isn't a lot of bleeding even though you can see the quick it hasn't broken down very far into it. Some antiseptic spray and keeping an eye on it and Charlie should be fine.

Ouch ouch . I am glad it does not bleed a lot . You sound so calm . Hopefully Charlie can leave it be .
Maybe you find some PetFlex no chew bandage ?

Good thought, I will try and find a sticky bandage or something tomorrow when I go for Leucillin.
Made me smile when you said I sound calm. Everyone says that at work.... That I'm calm and "collected" in an emergency......whereas inside, in reality, I'm like "Errrr, I was totally Freaking Out!!!" I must have a good way of hiding panic.lol.

Charlie's upsetting me by licking his paw so much though :/ That's the bit I am worried about.

I have no personal experience with something like that! What a do have experience, through a close friend, with is a broken toenail...and don't know it would relate to the dew claw.

Nipper was put on an antibiotic and she had to watch for signs of infection as it could have gone to the bone. Again.....might not be the same as a dew claw..... I don't think it's cause for ER...but you might want to call your vet in the AM to ask if he needs to be seen. What I just read says it should be covered to prevent licking.

    Seeing all being well!

Maggie broke her toe nail off, and she was fine, I think I sprayed it with antibiotic spray for a few days but I was concerned because she licked the medicine. The toenail grew back with out any problems.
