    Default Veterinarian cost

Henry will need a liver biopsy and he will have his Cryptorchidism neuter done and a small hernia repair. What I am not exactly sure about is his hernia repair. The surgeon said something about the testicle being the hernia. I will follow up once I get my write up.
Nevertheless this is not what this post is about.
I would have preferred to go to a different clinic but there are no consult appointments until June. I waited already 6 weeks to get this appointment.
This clinic has seen Henry multiple times and each time we were charged $140. At the other clinic we would be charged a lower initial fee and then a 1/2 for each of the follow up fees.
The surgeon consult apparently is needed . I am not exactly sure why? Donít they have all the records from the other vets within the same clinic? They take your dog and place him in a kennel . Then they finally take him out and I insisted for them to also look at Henryís teeth, but they look at him maybe 10 min if that. Keep in mind this is not the surgeon looking at your vet just the assistant surgeon. They call you and tell you that they do what we already established needs to be done. 20min later you get your dog back and they hand you the estimate and you need to sign and agree before you get a surgery date.
Here I am thinking I just paid $140 for the estimate and to agree to pay the upper amount up front on surgery day. They will refund if it costs less.
What I find so concerning is that if they are finding my dog needs addition repair etc. They stop the procedure try to call you and you better pay that right then and there. So what are they going to do? 1st the whole motion of stopping the procedure and having my dog longer under anesthesia to give me a call makes no sense to me. But really letís say something happens and they canít get a hold of me are are they not fixing what needs to be fixed ?
I think I will have them charge double and pay with a credit card that way I am covered and they can just go ahead and do what needs to be done. I do not want to wait for June and then July for the procedure and go to the other clinic. It is hard to wait already when they do a biopsy and you want answers. I am glad I got insurance and most of the cost will be covered. I am just not happy how payment is handelnd while this is already a stressful time for a pet owner. I totally understand paying upfront it is expensive. But I feel like itís all about the $ and not helping my pet. I am already a wreck and just want it done and over with !

I am sorry. Does sound like all they care about is the money. I have never paid up front for anything. Not even at the emergency vet and they will even bill if necessary What do they think is wrong? I know you are friends with breeder does he have any insight? I imagine they did ultrasound of the liver. I also would give credit card and tell them to charge what ever. Glad you have insurance.

I'm sorry!!! I've never heard of that!!!! When I've had surgery at Blue Pearl, I do have to pay to see the surgeon....if I haven't seen them initially.

I've had to put money down before hand....and they credit me if it doesn't cost that much. I've never heard of having to call you in the middle of a surgery to get more money! That's insane!!!! I think I'd spend another $140 and go somewhere else!

They are also a Blue Pearl Hospital. I do not want to wait and they do have good reputation. Unfortunately they have to add things like this into the cost estimate. I am sad that not everyone can afford to pay this much upfront. Not every pet owner is prepared for their pet to need surgery beyond regular spay and neuter.
Anyway the date is the 19th he will be there overnight and I will be a wreck.

    How stressful! I'm so sorry!

This sounds very similar to the experience we had with Blue Pearl several years ago when Wonka was scheduled for surgery (which ended up not happening). They charge ahead of the surgery and then you're told that you will get a call if more needs to be done and you have to authorize another charge. Yes, when it comes to the "corporate" part of Blue Pearl, it really is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. The doctors and surgeons may be great, but the actual company policies about payment really suck. Since Wonka didn't actually have his surgery I felt like I had to fight with the hospital admin to get my pre-paid money BACK. They actually acted like they weren't going to refund it at first. And I wasn't even the one to cancel the surgery. The day of the scheduled surgery Wonka was taken from me, stuffed in a cage and had his leg shaved and an IV put in when they suddenly realized they didn't have OXYGEN to use for surgeries that day!!! How could they let something like that happen?!?! Ridiculous. And then the administration tried to tell me that surgery is non-refundable!!! I fought and got the money back.

Anyway, if you can afford it, I would ask them if you can pre-pay extra and have a credit and then make sure they tell you if you can get that credited amount BACK if it's not used. Maybe even get it in writing if you can. That way, they have no reason to deny service/care to Henry if something else comes up during surgery. I'm sorry that he has to stay overnight at the hospital. Poor Henry - and poor you! I hope they will let you provide a t-shirt or a familiar blanket in the crate?

Please update and remind us when the date gets closer so we can send loads of positive puggy vibes for Henry's surgery.

I know what you're saying!!!!! That's where Pugs for Pinky comes in as do the raffles!

While I do think Blue Pearl is high in price........very high...they do have human grade surgical rooms. I've toured there! They have everything that we have for humans! YEARS ago....before Blue Pearl...when it was Michigan Vet Specialist...I had a pug that I didn't like his breathing. I had a dental there. Cost 3 or 4 times that of a reg. vet...but I knew he was in good hands!

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry you are going through this with sweet Henry. I know you will do what's best for him and I hope all goes well. Leaving him overnight is going to be the worse! I'm sorry! We had to leave Otis overnight when he had his Brachycephalic surgery done. I hated it! Please keep us updated!

Unfortunately this is standard practice here at most of our vets including the vet school. When we had Tucker at the vet school they stopped the surgery to call me to get an approval for the additional charge, I was horrified that they called me during surgery and I wasn’t in my right mind to even process the cost I just approved it because I wanted everything done to save my boy. I agree with Amy I would give them a credit card on file or pay a higher upfront fee and insist they put it in writing that excess gets refunded within so many days, but I might also specifically say it’s for these potential issues during surgery. Poor Henry I will be sending good thoughts on the 19th for him.
