    Unhappy Bella has ANOTHER UTI

We had her on special food and she was getting NO treats except the ones the vet recommended and she's got ANOTHER dang UTI! My poor Bella. They gave her fluids, different antibitotics and she's on her way home.

Anyone else have repeat reapeat UTI'ers?

This is not uncommon with females: the urethra is SO short in females that it's like a superhighway for bugs. I know Rona has this issue with at LEAST LouLou, if not with both her girls.

It just stinks because I know she's feeling awful. And I thought the food was supposed to help and maybe it has and thats why it's been almost 2 months since her last one.

Thanks Alice for responding. It makes me feel a little bit better.

Dayna, if I thought diet and supplements were the answer I would be there in a shot. I am sure maybe they slow it down a little but they won't stop them cold. UTI's are something that LouLou has continually so we just go with maintenance and continual checking. She virtually lives with one medication or another. The bug that caused Puck that HUGE problem earlier this year appears not to have been knocked out and she is on another round of meds - this time longer. The meds cost $40 a dose and we are going for 3 weeks.......

Hope Bella gets over it soon.

Sorry to hear about another infection. I just got an email from a woman through the rescue. She was telling me how she suffered years with uti's and would take one antibiotic after another but she still suffered from frequent infections. Finally, several years ago, a urologist gave her the antibiotic Macrobid (think that is the spelling) I guess it is a medicine that you can't take long term. It cleared her of the infections, and it has been over three years since her last infection. One of her pugs also suffered so she spoke to her vet about the drug. The pug was given the medicine and has been free of infections for over two years. She explained how this antibiotic worked differently then some of the others, but I can't get into my rescue account at the moment to reread it. It might be worth talking to your vet. CHyna sufferes from frequent infections also so I will talk to mine the next time she gets one.

That's NOT a dumb question!! The first signs you will notice are frequent urination and drinking more. Quite probably "accidents" around the house. Then there is blood in the urine. The urine will probably be cloudier and have a foul odour. As the infection becomes worse, the dog will display signs of being very unwell, depressed and listless. Left untreated the infection will become systemic and can cause kidney failure. Dogs can die from untreated UTIs. Unless you know about UTIs they are very easy to miss initially. As with anything, if your dog is showing worrying behaviour that continues for more than 24 hours - off to the vet! The vet can do a collection, check for signs of infection and then send a sample off for a "culture and sensitivity" where the bug is identified and the right antibiotic prescribed. This is critical, as not all antibiotics knock out all bugs. Trust me, my girls have had SO MANY antibiotics - some as pills, some as liquid, some as injections intramuscularly or IV or under the skin. It's important to have the right medication for the right bug!

Sorry Bella is having these nasty UTI's.
We went through several different med's before they were able to find the one to cure Bubba's. It was just getting the right one, and that was frustrating enough!
They removed urine with a needle to get the fresh urine right from his bladder. After that was done we finally had a correct diagnoses on the culture.
Has she had this procedure done? It didn't bother Bubba at all.

Well when Bella starts getting one you can tell within a few days. The vet said we caught this one early - very early. Bellas first sign is she doesn't act like herself, her tail won't be curled up and she won't wiggle when someone comes home. She will eat and then go directly to her puggy bed. She won't climb the 3 stairs from the yard to the deck to come in and when she goes to potty she'll squat and then jump up real quick like something bit her. Takes her forever to work up the nerve to try again and she all but stops drinking even though she's not as much of a drinker as Bear is but it's still very noticeable differences.

I'm just glad my baby is going to get better with these different meds and that we caught it in time. Plus I'm thankful the VPI is considering this one "problem" so they are paying at maximum every time we have to take her. Just on her UTI's along the insurance has more than paid for itself.
