Quick onset of Aspiration Pneumonia

This happened to my son's lab. They caught it early and he was on the mend in no time. They tried to blame megaesophagus, turns out that the ER vet was wrong.

I had a bout of this with one of my pugs
she went from healthy one day to SICK SICK the next
they put her on meds and told me get a cold mist vapourizer and it worked wanders
glad to hear your boy is improving..

happened soo fast ..........it really scared me
so active to just not anything
she had kennel couch shortly before that and it mastered into this....

Glad to hear Max is on the mend. I too would have been upset about his kennel.

Bah, I think I'm just spoiled by my vet. When Gracie had her surgery, she was concerned about her breathing and so she held her until she woke up from the anesthesia. My vet is an angel.

I too am spoiled with our vet. Not so much the vet but the techs and the girls at reception always take care of Eddie and Zoey. Infact they held Eddie after his dental surgery while eating their lunch while he was waking after his surgery.

A few months ago we brought into rescue a young male pug who had contracted aspirate pneumonia during his neuter operation a few days before. Instead of taking him to the designated foster home, we took him straight to our emergency vet where he was treated for several days. Long story short, he made a good recovery and after treatement for some other medical issues was recently adopted out as a normal, healthy, active pug boy.

Several things you mentioned about your vet concern me and once you get your boy home, I would urge you to look for another vet. You mentioned several things you were not pleased with but one of the things that you may not be aware of is that no pug should ever be given annual vaccinations in this day and age. The only legally required vaccination is rabies and that should be given every 3 years (using a 3 year vaccine); other vaccines should be given only when there is a high risk of contracting the disease and one shot to an adult dog for many diseases (distemper, parvo, etc.) may be good for life, but at minimum 3 years.

Max was able to come home yesterday!

He will be on two different pills and bland diet. Also, there will be a follow-up x-ray on Monday. He is getting back into the swing of things, being a couch potato. (Which was recommended by the MD. Not to much work on Max's part to follow that rule!!!)

He breathing is much better, but he does still wheezy. During the night, I noticed he did get into a few irregular breathing pattern for a few minutes, but then eventually relaxed. I will closely watch him during the next few days.

I will defiantly look into a new vet that has experience working with pugs and also one that is less commercialized who doesn't push for unnecessary vaccinations and procedures. Thanks everyone for thoughts and prayers! I will continue to keep everyone posted on his recovery.
