I am about to head out but I would be willing to help - maybe can figure it out. I should be back in a couple hours or so. Does she have Skype? Can do both talk and if necessary share screen. I will check back in when I am back home.

Honey that would be wonderful, but my guess is she doesn't even know what Skype is and has no idea how to do a shared screen. She has Hughes.net and it is horribly slow out there and she is on a network which she didn't set up and doesn't know how to work on. She can access her email, so it's not that she can't get on the internet at all.

From listening to her descriptions of the problems this is how I understand it:

Computer 1: A part of the network has failed....switch, router, splitter....something and the needed part is not within budget right now.

Computer 2: The old Acer computer....she can access email, but PV is a no go, it keeps popping up ads and surveys so she can't even enter a password. My son thinks a malicious "root kit" has infected it and it needs to be re-formatted.

Any ideas?

I always get in that way all the time.......

can download AVG.............a free antivirus program and that would get rid of the problem too without the need to format

This description gave me an idea... don't know if it will work, but I'm going to email Ellen now about it.

I just had to take a similar virus type thing of my husband's computer. The pop up, popped up right over the area where one would enter info. I read the add and googled it, and I had to use the safe mode and go and delete the program from his computer.

I guess Anne is not available to help.

Is she is still getting internet? I believe she is getting wireless from Anne, can she check if she is receive the signal strength.

I'd be interested in knowing what sort of error message she gets when she tries to get to the Village's page. Might be a reformat job, which "could" be easier than having to walk her through deleting a viral file. The toss up is that she'd lose everything on the PC unless she can fix, rather than reformat the operating system. ALSO, what operating system is she using?
