just wanted to know when and how much to exercise him..
he is crated still when hes alone to stop him jumping and playing with other dog..
when im in the room he is on leash and sat next to me..

It's been several years, but Roxy my bt had patella surgery. I think it was several weeks of crate rest, only going outside to potty on a leash. Then exercise by walking on a leash only. I think for about a month. Hoping someone else will chime in.

Are you talking about luxating patella surgery? One of my boys had it, and for the first two weeks, he was only allowed to walk to potty then strict crate rest. (or my holding him 24 hours a day) After the first two weeks, he was allowed only to walk with no running, jumping or going up and down stairs for about 6 weeks. I kept a leash on him in the house to keep him from trying to run or chase his brother plus I blocked all the stairs and turned all my furniture cushions up so he could not jump on anything

If there is a hydrotherapy pool near you it might be worth asking the vet if he could do that, and when.
