And no i don't mean fatness of pugs.
My mom ran into a lady she works with who started up a conversation on how her daughter has pugs and mom said we have pugs too. So this lady went on to say how her daughters pugs were about 17-20 inches at the shoulder and mom said they're oversized coz ours are around 10-12 inches at the shoulder. Well they lady in a huff told mom that we must have toy pugs and her daughter has Grand Pugs and that it's an actual size for the breed. Mom just laughed and told her there's no such thing and that her daughter was duped by whatever breeder she got them from since they're extremely out of standard.
Have you ever heard people refer to Pugs as Toy or Grand? Or any other rediculous designer label put on them to make them seem special?
well the pug is a member of the toy group.....
and i think all pugs are grand, no matter what size they are!
the females are usually smaller......
I've always heard pugs should be 14-18 #'s and Junior was 30 and Louie is 24

I dont get how people get huffy about not being at "standard" if they arent trying to get show dogs. I just roll my eyes at people who like to brag about their dogs credentials/background- brag about how awesome they are.
What does it matter? Your pug is bigger, it stands out and it's not a negative thing.
Sucks if they paid more for supposedly "grand" pugs, but really after growing to love this pug it shouldnt matter- it was just money and cant be worth more than the love of a pug.
Mine is slightly taller and chestier than most pugs, she doesnt have a standard coat, it's thicker. Even though it makes it hard to find her clothes....
Im about love the pug you're with!

RIP our heart, our little monkey girl.
I went to my first pug meetup on saturday and a lot of people questioned me as to what mine is mixed with due to her nose being a little longer, and shes apricot...so now i worry about that, however I think shes all pug just not "show quality" then there was a pug there that was so tiny. Phoebe is only 4 months so shes a ball of energy and the little one I think she thought was her age so she was trying to play and the other one just looked at her. I came to find out the one the same size of my 4mth old was actually 3 years old, just so tiny...she was the most precious thing i wanted to steal her
The breed standard does call for between 14 -18lbs, but I'm sure some are being shown that weigh a little more than that.
Many pugs are not bred to the breed standard and will be much bigger than the standard and some smaller. If you are not showing, it doesn't really matter how much they weigh. I have to agree, whatever their size, pugs are grand.

Back in the late 1960's and 70's a lot of the pugs that were being shown were quite large. The AKC threatened to kick them out of the toy group, so people started trying to breed smaller pugs and the "standard" was set at 14-18 lbs.
Sadly, some unscrupulous breeders will advertise "teacup", "pocket" or other names for small pugs. What they are simply doing is breeding the runts of the litters which may often have health issues. Pugs that have liver shunts are almost always tiny too. In this sad society, some people think that if it has a fancy name, that it must be better. This is the same way that bad breeders intentionally bred dog mixes and called them "designer dogs" and people spent large sums of money for mutts while these same dogs are regularly put to sleep at pounds and shelters. Go figure.
If you question if your pug is in fact a pug, they now have reasonably priced doggie DNA kits for about $60.

^ Haha! The things they think of! Good to know though there's DNA kits, my moms vet cant even determine what her dog is and maybe we can find out. She bought her off an ad for a "Maltese mix" and she doesn't look anything close. We think she might be American Eskimo mix. Either way, I love how unique she is.
Off topic I know but photo for good measure.

RIP our heart, our little monkey girl.
I'm about to hi-jack your thread, and I apologize. But I was going to post something related to this tea-cup business.
I was at the PRONE event, with hundreds of pugs. I was in line with a woman for coffee and we were chatting and I saw her three beautiful pugs. I figured this was a real lover of the breed.
What she said next was devastating.
She said her next pug would be a teacup.
I've been told my face can not hide my emotions and sure enough, conversation halted. I had nothing to say to her. I wanted to shake her silly, maybe wack her upside the head, but there was nothing I wanted to say to her. I'm horrified and upset that this is happening.
I guess if I was in your mom's shoes, I'd be hyper-sensitive to any remote insinuation that I was going for a smaller than normal pug. And again, I apologize for taking your question off on a tangent.
Bottoms Up!

I have an 8lbs pug, 14lbs pug, 24lbs pug, 35lbs pug, 38/40lbs pug - I laugh because they are all the same breed just so different in sizes.
