    Question Designer breeds

If this does not belong in this section, feel free to move it. It's not a pug, but it IS a rescue scene...

Y'know how PUGGLES are supposed to be the best of each breed? And to "do away" with the bad parts of each... I guess "fix" the breathing issues, and eyes of the pug... and capitalize on the stamina of the beagle??

And y'know how people kid about puggles being dogs who can run far but not find their way home (and other unflattering characterizations)?

Well I met a Chihuahua JRT Cross in fosters yesterday... Has anyone any experience with this combination?

Her story is one of an "incredible" journey... She was brought up from Tennessee last May/June at 3 years old by a "rescue" organization. She had not been spayed, because... she was full of puppies! She birthed them and then ran away. (She had been chipped by the rescue, which is how we got this info.)

She could not be caught for 7+ months! All this HORRIBLE winter up here, NORTH SHORE of Boston area, she was out: IGNORING traps set for her, getting by some other way. When they finally finally caught her, she was - you guessed it - post partum... lactating. They could not find her puppies at all - and weren't even sure if they were still alive.

Now she has been in foster home for 3 weeks. She is COMPLETELY HEALTHY (great teeth, eyes, no cuts (she had had one scrape on her tummy when she came in, but that has healed), no worms, no giardia!)... She seems to be keeping herself lactating (only the farthest back teats) (?)... so she has not yet been spayed.

Fosters report: she is housetrained, has free rein of their house, and chose a pillow on the sofa her first night and often chooses that to sleep on even at night over in bed with them. She has barked only a few times when Mr. Foster came in, but she is more than happy to be held and handled (positioned) by them (has developed trust). She rides in the car fine - 2 hours each way to an from their NH place for a weekend... She as NOT happy when a guest arrived with a dog who invaded her space (due to lactation?), but she did not even attack, they say.

In any case, the Foster couple as worried now that they are stuck with her... so I may be filling out foster paperwork since I will have to try her with my pack before *I* can commit them to her as a sibling.

We sat in the car for an hour with her. She was in the back seat (alone), I in front. Once she settled, she was observant about outside the car, and inside... not overly responsive to kissy noises or high pitched calling sounds... but she ate one of my homemade liver biscuits, then another, and then one from my hand... and I got to rub her chest, ears, shoulders (she is living in a TIGHT harness now)... and when I stopped patting her she didn't "reach out" for more, but did look over to see WHY I was stopping.

So now she is ~4... and has shown her JRT (or is it chi-) tenacity, cleverness and I don't know what but STRONG survival genetics, eh? I suspect she will "loosen up" (with a lot of patience and time) to a wise beyond her years confident lady... and my JRT, Mr. Tigger, who will want nothing to do with her is probably going to be the first to "meet" her (with a metal barrier between them for a good 15-30 minutes)... as opposed to my bouncy, play-w-me, female, Ohna... who might be "too much" space invasion for her...

I would never have thunk of my Mr. T. as a greeter dog, buuut... the vet who has seen this little gal mentioned that ANY female meeting a lactating female would make assertive "clean her up" moves and that sounds as if it would not be well received by this little one!

She weighs in at 15 lbs (my JRT mixes are 20 and 23)... Has anyone any experience with this combination?

No experience with jack russel/chi crosses. What an odd one. I do have some experience with semi-feral dogs.

She's an adept scavenger/hunter, beware of counter surfing, cupboard opening sneakiness. They learn super quickly to identify human blind spots (like when you're driving?) and to move only in them when they're sneaking, so they're invisible ninja dogs. Any food left anywhere is fair game, and I'd expect some sports at dinner time too, if you feed them near each other. None of this is unfixable.

I think she might be hard to confine too, clearly she's an adept escapee. I also think no one has really seen her personality yet. Going from streetside living to house living is not a small change, it will likely take her some time to adapt. So, who knows what she's really like? Too soon to say.

Sounds like a good experiment, taking her in. It will be nice to hear how she turns out, and how she settles in. May there be peace in your household!

Designer breeds are mutts that are sold for greed at a higher price!

    Some mutts are very healthy!

    Thank you both (all)!!

Funny about the sneakiness... She is completely UNfood interested I hear.. which will be a new scene for me to work with!

But I laughed at the "blind spot" concept. I almost imagine having a leash to her harness and another to a collar, otoh, that harness was really on her snugly (altho I saw no indication of sores or baldness... MAYBE they let her be naked in the house).

They reported to me that in the 3 weeks since they have been fostering her they have "not left the house" and I fully disclosed to the handler of this scene that I could not promise that! That I could ASSURE however that she would be safe (in her own space until we know better - a LOT better), warm, fed, watered, loved, exercised (and aired) regularly, and INDOORS (unless escorted by a person) under my care. I got a nearly immediate reply that the handler had been trying to encourage the fosters to go ahead and leave "Jill" for short periods... They (the fosters) have some "baggage" from other dogs they fostered who were destructive, it turns out... nothing like that has been indicated in Jill's behavior...

I love the comment about "no one has seen her true colors" yet... I had heard only a few weeks ago the "rule of threes" applied to rescued dogs: 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months... as being turning points when "characteristics" show themselves! And I laughed... I have often said "a few weeks, then a month, then a few months later" (depending on the age of the rescue-ee)...

We shall see. I wasn't looking to build up my pack more... buuut... well... We'll see...

ITM, here's her picture (I hope)... Naming suggestions are welcome. I love her little crooked blaze!

Another brave soul! I have Snafu, and you have Jill. Eleven months, and we are still working on behavior, here. God bless you for trying.
